Atari Punk Console

The Atari Punk Console is a famous circuit created by Forrest M. Mims III and it was first published in the magazine “Engineer’s Notebook: Integrated Circuit Applications” in 1981. The group Kaustic Machines later dubbed it the “Atari Punk Console” (APC) because its “lo-fi” sounds resemble classic sounds from 1980s Atari console games, with a square wave output similar to that of the Atari 2600.

It uses two 555 timer ICs or a dual 556 timer and is basically an astable square-wave oscillator that drives a monostable oscillator, which generates a single (square) pulse. The circuit is a simple, relatively inexpensive, and easy-to-build DIY sound generator that can be easily adapted and configured in many different ways, hence its popularity as a beginners friendly project.
